Third son of Robert Udny of Auchterellon, Ellon, and Elizabeth Fullerton, his wife. Alumnus, Mar. Coll., 1700-1, etc. ; M.A.,King's Coll., 1724. App. to Alexander Thomson (1680). Procurator for the Town Council of Aberdeen from 30th November, 1709. Sheriff Clerk of Kincardineshire, 1716-22. Procurator Fiscal of Aberdeenshire, 1723-27. Sheriff Substitute of Aberdeenshire, 1727-37, and 1747-48. Clerk to the Governors and Patrons of Robert Gordon's Hospital, from May, 173 (Littlejohn's 'Sheriff Court Records,' III., pp. 115 and 117.) Sometime Joint County Clerk of Aberdeenshire. One of the Assessors to the Rector of King's Coll., 1728-33. Fiars Juror, 1737. Married, 20th December, 1716, Jean (died 22nd August, 1770, aged 75), dau. of the late Alexander Walker, sometime Lord Provost of Aberdeen, with issue (besides six sons and three daughters who died in early youth) : - Robert, merchant, London; succeeded to the estates of Udny and Dudwick; married, first, at Oxford, 13th August, 1749, Hougham; second, Margaret Jourdan, subgoverness to the Princess Charlotte; died 1802. John, appointed, in January, 1761, British Consul at Venice and Leghorn; married, in 1777, Selina, dau. of John Cleveland, M.P., secretary to the Admiralty; died in 1800. Ernest, died at Grenada. Helen, married, January, 1750, Walter Cochran, Town Clerk Depute (died 8th May, 1779, aged 75); died 4th December, 1809, aged 92. Margaret, married Alexander Ross. Died 30th December, 1768, aged 87.
Note:The Consul was, according to Southey, 'the first person who procured certain intelligence of the enemy's designs against Malta, and from his own sagacity foresaw that Egypt must be their object.' The 'enemy' referred to was the fleet which left Toulon with Napoleon's army for Egypt, and which was finally destroyed in Aboukir Bay by Nelson. His son, John Robert Fullerton Udny, Colonel, Coldstream Guards, succeeded his uncle, in 1802, as heir of entail in the lands of Udny and Dudwick."
