The Swedish birth index records a child of this name born 19 July 1881 in Bräcke, Jämtland, Sweden. Other sources record his birth place as New Richmond, St Croix, Wisconsin, USA. However, census records show that Olaf, as his name is rendered in the 1920 census, was born in Sweden and that his first wife was Swedish born too. They came to the USA in 1905 and had several children before Olaf had a relationship with Genevieve Kelly. In 1920 Olaf had submitted papers to become a nauralised American; Emilia was an alien. Olaf worked as Steam Fitter in a Plumbing Store Shop.

The 1940 US Census for Portland, Multnomah, Oregon recorded Olof [sic] and Genevieve Erickson living at 3829 S E Market Street. Genevieve's father James Kelly also lived there. Olaf, born in Wisconsin, was 59 Years old, and worked as a fitter in a steam heating company. Genevieve was 54 years old and James Kelly 88 years. ^{3 5 6}
