The 1841 census for Strathdon Parish, Aberdeenshire, recorded Francis Coutts, aged 86 years, living at Ballachailach with two women, both called Margaret Coutts, one aged 59 years and one aged 35 years, and a young girl, Ann Lindsay, aged 11 years, most likely the daughter of Alexander Lindsay and Isobel Coutts. All answered 'Yes' to the question of whether they were born in the county they were then living in.


Francis Coutts has not been located in the 1851 census.


In the death certificate of his daughter, Margaret, in 1883, Francis Coutts was recorded as an agricultural labourer. He was deceased then. ^{1 2}

Francis married Margaret STRACHEN, daughter of James STRACHEN and Jean THOM. (Margaret STRACHEN was baptised on 12 October 1781 in Glenbucket parish, Aberdeenshire, Scotland ^{1 4}.)
