   Cause of his death was murder.

  General Notes:

'...Pitcairn's Criminal Trials records that on 15th December, 1580, Walter Lauder, "serwand to vmqle the Lairde of Bass," was tried for the "crewall murthour of vmquhile Mr. James Lauder of the Bass, his maister; committit in the moneth of October." This servant was found guilty of being act and part in the murder and was executed.'

Note: Electric Scotland calls Walter jthe 'uncle' of James. Other sources calls him a 'cousin' eg Wikipedia:
'George Lawder of Bass was awarded the escheat of the goods of "Walter Lawder, son lawful of the deceased Alexander Lawder of Umboquhy [Ummachie], convicted, become in will, fugitive or at the horn for not compearing to underlie the laws for the slaughter of James Lawder of Bass, committed within his (James's) awin place of Beil on 4th October last, or throw being justifiet thairfoir." Dated 16 December 1580. Walter was subsequently executed for this crime.'
