James married Marjory BARCLAY, daughter of John BARCLAY of Towie and Daughter INNES, by 15 November 1490(resignation).1 2 (Marjory BARCLAY was born about 1465 and died about 1547 2.)


  Marriage Notes:

"Marjorie (Barclay), the second daughter, married James King, of Bourtie. He owned the estate of Barras and obtained a new charter of part of the property on November 13th, 1490.

XC) Jacobus King de Bourty resignauit in manibus Johannis (Comitis) de Mar et Garioche dimid ietatem omnium terarum de Westerhous infra vicecomitatum de Aberdeen. Quiquidem dominus comes easdem dicto Jacobus Maiorie Berclay sposa sua . . . Walterus de Touy petit instrumenta. ...'

This charter is abridged from Notary Protocol, entitled Register of Sasines for the Burg of Aberdene, Vol. I. " (pages 220 and 221)

"The raid (on 25 January 1493) must have been a serious one, as among those who took part in it we find the names of William Earl Marischal, Alexander Seton of Meldrum, Patrick Leslie of Balquhane, Johnston of that Ilk, Patrick Gordon of Haddo (father-in-law to Walter Berclay), Thomas Gordon of Kennarty, Walter Innes of Innermarky, Alexander Innes of that Ilk, Duncan Davidson of Auchinhamper, James King of Barras (brother-in-law of Walter Berclay), and Arthur Forbes of Raeraes." (page 223)

"James King of Barra and Bourtie resigned, 15 November 1490, into the hands of John, Earl of Mar and Lord of Garioch, his half of the lands of Westerhouse adjacent to Barra, and had a new charter of them to himself and his spouse. He died between January 1504-5, when his name appears on a jury, and 1507, when his son William was served his heir in Bourtie. He married Marjory, daughter of Barclay of Towie, who survived him, and died circa 1547. By her he had at least one son"
