"23 May 1757

Letter written by James Barclay, Jamaica to Captain John Thomson, late commander of the Fonthill, to be left at the Jamaica Coffee House, London, per H.M.S. Roebuck. Thanks brother-in-law for letter of 20 January by hand of Captain Arbuthnot, whom Barclay promises to assist and who hopes to ship cargoes from Lucea [Jamaica]. He cannot think of returning to Scotland for some time as he is involved in the affairs of Mr. Gordon and Mr. Knight as well as his own. Sends good wishes to his aged mother. Regrets that brother's two boys and a girl living in Jamaica were not mentioned in his will. Discusses what should be done. Also comments on letter to mother enclosed for delivery." (MS 1160/5/9)

"24 August 1909

Letter from P. J. Beveridge, St. Columba's Rectory, Lonmay, Aberdeenshire to C. T. Gordon. Describes two oil paintings in his possession of Ann Barclay and her husband Captain John Thompson of Faichfield, by Alexander, an Aberdeen artist, which are family heirlooms. Also discusses other genealogical points by which he attempts to prove some family connection." (MS 1160/16/17)
