General Notes:
"FORBES MARGARIT PATRICK FORBES/ F 14/11/1741 243/ 10 101 Tarves"
from Births and Baptisms
The baptisms of two daughters of Patrick Forbes of Schivas were recorded together, though from the baptism narrative it would seem Jean was the elder daughter and had been baptised in 1739:
Old Parish Registers Tarves parish Aberdeenshire Baptisms
"1741(at top of page) Novr 14 (this is the date heading for both entries though clearly only it applies to only one baptism) Jean Forbes Upon the (appears so faint as to be blank) day of November Jajvij C and thirty nine years Patrick Forbes of Schivas Esquire had a daughter bap(rest of word hidden by darkened end strip page) called Jean before witnesses Margarit Forbes And this day being the fourteenth day of November Jajvij C and (word hidden by darkened end strip page) one years Patrick Forbes of Schivas Esquire (word hidden by darkened end strip page) a daughter baptized named Margarit before witnes(rest of word hidden by darkened end strip page)" 2 4

SOME NOTES ON THE PARENTAGE OF JEAN AND MARGARET FORBES
On page 46 of The Gordons of Nethermuir by John Malcolm Bulloch it is stated that Margaret Forbes was the daughter of Hugh Forbes of Schivas. Bulloch is explicit:
"Gordon's wife was Margaret Forbes, eldest daughter of Hugh Forbes of Schivas and sister of Mrs Alexander Irvine of Drum."
If the Jean Forbes who married Alexander Irvine was the sister of the Margaret Forbes who married William Gordon of Nethermuir, it is not likely they were both daughters of his wife Christian Garden, whom Hugh Forbes married in 1754, since Bulloch also gives the date of the birth of the son of Margaret Forbes and William Gordon as 1767.
Patrick Forbes of Schivas had two daughters, Jean and Margaret, born in 1739 and 1741. Patrick died soon after, and, it is possible that Margaret may have been raised by her uncle Hugh Forbes.
Moreover the marriage narrative for the Jean Forbes who married Alexander Irvine of Drum states she was the "only" daughter of Hugh Forbes as Schivas.
We can conclude that there may have been some confusion as to the exact relationships in the Forbes of Schivas family.
SCOTTISH DATES
"Scottish dates In Scottish handwriting you will find dates represented using the prefix jaj eg jajvC~and fourtie two which is 1542. The jaj comes about from a misinterpretation of handwriting down through the centuries. Initially the part of the date which is one thousand was represented as i m, where i = 1 and m = 1,000. Because a numeral i on its own was often written as j this became jm. Another convention in some hands was to elongate the last minim on an n or an m. Soon what was jm with an elongated last minim became mistaken for jaj.
This (jaj) is what you should take as meaning one thousand in documents written in this manner during the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. By the late 18th century dates were more commonly written in Arabic numerals. It was common for the word year (often written as yeir) to be repeated so you might have a date written down as In the yeir of our Lord jajviC~ and twentie sevin yeirs which we would understand as 1627 AD."
