  General Notes:

"The father of the above first-named Mr (William) Gordon was tenant of the Milltown of Aberdour, also factor for the 3d Earl of Aberdeen and for General Gordon of Fyvie. He bought the estate of Aberdour, and founded the village of New Aberlour. His son, who died as above in 1839, sold the estate shortly before his death. It is a tradition that the Lieutenant fell in a duel with a Frenchman, who appears to have been a good marksman, for it is added that he had previously shot three or four antagonists under similar circumstances. Lieut. G.'s grandfather died in 1785."

"This Mary Gordon was the eldest of sixteen children. It is apparently to her father that Mrs. Grant of Laggan refers in Letters from the Mountains, October 1802.

'Gordon of A has nothing extraordinary about him, but that at twenty-five he is married and has already four daughters,'

but she understated the case, as there would seem to have been at that period five daughters and two sons. He was, however, thirty years of age and his wife twentythree. William Gordon married Mary Rose of Montcoffer, January 2 (22 per register), 1794, and had : Mary (above), born February 6, 1795; Alicia, born March 19, 1796; Alexander, born April 22, 1797; Penelope, born January 3, 1799 (m. Patrick Duff of Carnousie, q.v.); William, born January 18, 1800; Huntly, born May 13, 1801 (m. Captain Marshall); Magdalen, born January 4, 1802." (page 335, note 1)
