ANDERSON, Alexander Professor of Mathematics at Paris 1

  • Born: About 1582 1
  • Died: 1619 1

  General Notes:

Alexander Anderson, uncle of Janet Gregory, was a leading mathematician of his time. He was a pupil of the father of symbolic algebra, Viete, or Vieta. He acted as his editor, and expounded Viete's trigonometry, later incorporating Viete's ideas into his own thought.

It is considered by some that the Alexander Anderson who published works of geometry and algebra was a cousin of David Anderson and not a son. There may have been both.
