  General Notes:

"These Alexanders (Gordon, father and son) were not, however, identical as is shown by an entry in the Elgin Commissary Record of January 6, 1648, when James Geddes of Auchenraith assigns a band ([sic], Scots for bond) of August 1, 1633, 'maid to me be umqll. (late or deceased) Alexander Gordon, sumtyme of Oxhill, as principall, and with and for him George Gordone then in Oxhill, now in Newton of Drany, his sone, his caur. for 100 merks'."

from Lesmoir

It is uncertain whether the younger Alexander of the Gordons of Oxhill was in fact the 3rd of that designation. J. M. Wimberley does not list him as such. In fact he does not list an Alexander Gordon, son, separate from the father but merely infers that there were two. Without distinguish to which Alexander Gordon he is referring he states that:

"On April 24, 1638, Alexander Gordon in Oxhill received from the Marquis of Huntly a charter of wadset on Oxhill (Gordon Castle Inventory)."

While the elder Alexander Gordon, the father, is usually referred to as 'of Oxhill', from about 1630 Alexander Gordon is named as being 'in Oxhill', except for once in 1650-1 when the designation 'of Oxhill' returns, according to Wimberley's notes.

A 'charter of wadset' that Alexander Gordon received from the Marquis of Huntly pledged land to the person granting the charter in return for a loan. It was a kind of secured loan. The charter formally transferred the property's legal title and possession to the creditor, although with a specific right of what was called 'reversion' for the owner to reclaim it.

It is likely, for what is known of the later history of their descendants, that the Oxhill Gordons did not in fact reclaim their land for lack of money. Whether the younger Alexander Gordon was actually the 3rd laird of Oxhill would have depended on when exactly his father died, and which of the two Alexander Gordons, father or son, received the charter of wadset from the Marquis of Huntly. 1

Noted events in his life were:

1. Received: charter of wadset, 24 April 1638, on Oxhill. 1

2. Raided: house of Alexander Strachan of Glenkindie, 1644, at Auchnagatt. 1

3. Confessed: his rebellion, 2 January 1647, before Fordyce Presbytery. 1

4. Charged: with George Gordon of Leitcheston, 1649, before Committee of Estates. 1

5. Signatory: to a bond, 10 November 1650, at Keith, Banffshire, Scotland. 1

Alexander married.
