Marriage Notes: "Whatever may have been the reason, it is certain that he (John Abernethy) fell into embarrassed circumstances, and in 1612 disposed of a large portion of his estates, which were parted among various creditors. He died between 5 June and 21 September 1612, having married, first, Magdalen, daughter of Henry Urquhart, younger of Cromarty ; she had a charter as his future wife 30 September 1601, and died 4 April 1603" John next married Elizabeth STEWART, daughter of James STEWART 'the Bonnie Earl'. 2nd Earl of Moray, jure uxoris and Elizabeth STEWART Countess of Moray, suo jure, About 5 April 1605(charter).2 (Elizabeth STEWART was born about 1586 and died before 30 December 1608 2.) Marriage Notes: "Elizabeth, married to John Abernethy, eighth Lord Saltoun. Charter to her as his future wife, 5 April 1605. She died before 30 December 1608, having had no issue by her husband." John next married Anna STEWART, daughter of Walter STEWART Lord Blantyre and Nicolas SOMERVILLE, 30 December 1608(contract).3 (Anna STEWART was born about 1585.) Marriage Notes: "Anna, called 'senior fllia,' married (marriage-contract 30 December 1608) to John, eighth Lord Abernethy of Saltoun.' He died in 1612, and his widow had subsequently, by James, Marquess of Hamilton, a natural daughter, Margaret, who was married to James Hamilton, first Lord Belhaven." |
