from Scottish Quakers 1

  Research Notes:

THE SOCIETY OF FRIENDS

The Quaker Act of 1662 made it illegal to refuse to take the oath of allegiance to the King and country. Such people who refused were not then allowed to hold any secret meetings; because Friends believed it was wrong to take an oath, they were punished by law. The Conventicle Act of 1664 reaffirmed the illegality of holding secret meetings by people who did not pledge allegiance to the monarch. 3

John married Barbara SKENE, daughter of Alexander SKENE 4th of Dyce and Ann JOHNSTON, on 6 October 1670.1 (Barbara SKENE was born in December 1654 4 and died in 1709 2.)

  Marriage Notes:

"John of Auquhorthies and Lethenty, born 1653. He married Barbara Skene, who died 1709. He died 1726. Their daughter Margaret married Alexander Skene of Dyce, and carried the estate of Lethenty into that family."

from Thanage of Fermartyn

"Barbara Skene married to Forbes of Achortes in her 21st year of age"

from Family of Skene

"Forbes, John, eldest son of Alexander Forbes in Achinhamper, married Barbara Skene, 6.10.1670. [SRO.SQR.A.2.15]"

from Scottish Quakers

Note:

The date of the marriage here does not fit the details in
Memorials of the Family of Skene of Skene ed. William Forbes Skene, where the date of Barbara's birth, and the above quoted information, are said to have come from a family bible kept by the mother of the house:

"There has been preserved an old Bible, printed in 1559, which belonged to the Dyce family, in which Ann Johnston, the wife of Alexander Skene of Dyce, records the family history, continued by her son, John. Her record is as follows:

12th month, 1654, Barbara Skene was born .....

Barbara Skene married to Forbes of Achortes in her 21st year of age."

It may be that 21st has been misread and that the bride was in her 27th year. That would be a better fit. 1 2 4
