ANOTHER WIFE?

H.W. Lumsden, in 1889, says of the elder John Lumsden, brother of James, "He was twice married. By his first wife, who was, I think, a Calder of Asloun." Interpreting his language, it is obvious he is not certain of this, and other sources say that Agnes Strachan was his wife. It may be that John had three wives. 2

John married Agnes STRACHAN, daughter of Patrick STRACHAN fiar of Glenkindie and Issobell STEWART.1 (Agnes STRACHAN was born about 1522.)

  Marriage Notes:

William Strachan of Glenkindie, son of Duncan, married Elizabeth Gordon, daughter of Patrick Gordon of Fulzemont and Johnisleys - see Records of Aboyne, p.210 - where it is stated that they had issue Patrick, who married Bessie, sister of Robert Stuart of Laithers, with issue, William, who married Margaret (otherwise 'Janet') Forbes of Brux, and Agnes, wife of John Lumsden of Cushny."

John next married Elizabeth MENZIES, daughter of Gilbert MENZIES of Cowlie and Pitfodels, younger, Burgess of Guild and Provost of and Margaret KEITH, on 10 February 1565.2 (Elizabeth MENZIES was born about 1545.)

  Marriage Notes:

"By his second wife, Elizabeth Menzies of Pitfoddels, whom he (John Lumsden, 8th Laird, 4th of Cushnie) married 10th February, 1565, he had one son, Alexander, and, says the Cushnie MS., 'he did brake the house and gave out of his auld heritage the lands of Clova and Medians, being the third of his estate,' to this Alexander - an unwarrantable generosity which the writer (Robert, the tenth laird) very naturally resented."
