"On the occasion of the baptism of the twin sons of King James I. in October 1430, the honour of knighthood was conferred on him 'primogenitum D. Willelmi Creichton Cancellarii,' and on several other children, including William, afterwards sixth Earl of Douglas, for whose murder the Chancellor was subsequently responsible."

James married Janet DUNBAR co-heiress of Moray, daughter of James DUNBAR 4th Earl of Moray and Margaret SETON, between 1442 and 1446.^{1 2} (Janet DUNBAR co-heiress of Moray was born about 1426 and died by 1506 ¹.)

  Marriage Notes:

At an early age, but not prior to 1442, he married Janet Dunbar, elder daughter of James Dunbar, Earl of Moray, and sister of Elizabeth Dunbar, the wife of Archibald Douglas, second son of James, Earl of Douglas, who although the younger daughter, seems to have carried the earldom and a great share of the estates to her husband, while the elder had as her portion the barony of Frendraught, as well as Brawl and other lands in Caithness, with other property in the south of Scotland.
In her right Sir James Crichton is generally designed Lord of Frendraught, and as early as 26 March 1446, under that designation, and with the consent of Jonet, his wife, he granted to John de Schaw a charter of his lands of Henristoune, in the barony of Renfrew, in excambion for Dryfholme and other lands, in the lordship of Annandale, to which deed one of the witnesses was 'carissimo patre meo Willelmo domino de Crechtoun,' and next year under the same designation he is witness to an instrument following on the resignation by Christian de Grymislaw...."

"Janet, married, between 1442 and 1446, to James, second Lord Crichton...He died
about 1454, and she married, secondly, John Sutherland, who, in a charter of 17 January 1458-59, is designed husband of Janet, Countess of Moray."
