PARENTAGE

In early works, published in 1910 and 1912, on the Gordons John Malcolm Bulloch states that Mary Stewart was the daughter of "Robert Stewart", though he does not specify who exactly her father was. Later, in 1933, in his work on the Stewarts of Drumin he identifies her as the daughter of Thomas Stewart of Keithmore and Anne Gordon.

Eleven children are recorded in Mortlach baptismal registers as being born to the couple in question. None is named Mary in the baptism registers as they appear online at Scotland's People website. Bulloch also names a daughter, Jane, who likewise does not appear in the register.

Mary was still giving birth as late as 1826, so a possible birth date for her, as Bulloch suggests it, of 1779 seems a little late, but since she married in 1796, she must have been born by the early 1780s.

Mary married Captain William GORDON in Inchnacape, 5th of Minmore, son of John GORDON 4th of Minmore, Jacobite 1745 and Elspet GRANT, on 13 September 1796 in Tomintoul RC parish, Banffshire, Scotland.1 (Captain William GORDON in Inchnacape, 5th of Minmore was born about 1755, died on 5 November 1829 3 and was buried in 1829 in Downan graveyard, Glenlivet, Inveravon parish, Banffshire, Scotland 3.)

Note:

The marriage text in the record book quite clearly records the bride as Margaret, not Mary, Stuart. This may be a clerical error, or she may have held both names.
