There are two records that appear to record this marriage. They each attribute a different surname to the bride. In the baptism record of their daughter, Ellen, dated 7 February 1830 in Shankill Parish Co. Armagh, James McConaghy's wife was named as Mary Thompson, the surname which appears in the County Down transcript.

The actual marriage appears to have taken place in the Roman Catholic parish of Shankill, County Armagh.
