  General Notes:

John, aged 25, was recorded as the son in law of Bridget O'Brien in the New Monkland 1881 census. The family were living at Bell Street in Airdrie. John was recorded there as having been born in Renfrewshire, although other records contradict that. He was also recorded as being a coach driver.

John Skelton gave notice at Coatbridge on 7 November 1888 of the birth of his son James Patrick. John was recorded as a coachman. ¹

John married Mary O'BRIEN (DNA Link), daughter of George O'BRIEN and Bridget VALLELY (DNA Link), on 16 December 1880 in St Margaret's RC Church, Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland. (Mary O'BRIEN (DNA Link) was born on 26 February 1861 in Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland ² and died in 1891 in Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland ³.)

  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was celebrated according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church. John Hughes was the celebrant. The witnesses were William McLay and Catie O'Brien.

John Skelton was an unmarried man of 25 years, of 2 Flowerhill (??) Street, Airdrie. He worked as a miner's drawer. His parents were both living.

Mary O'Brien was a domestic servant and lived at 5 Bell Street, Airdrie. She was 19 years old and unmarried. Her father was deceased.

The marriage was registered on 21 December 1880 at Airdrie, the registrar being William Whyte.
