  General Notes:

In 1871 Benjamin Muligan, his wife Margaret, and their three children were living at Turfholm in the parish of Lesmahagow Lanarkshire, as recorded by the census of that year. Benjamin, a limestone miner, was 30 years old and had been born in Ireland. His wife Margaret, a year older, was also Irish-born. The children, James, aged 10 years, Susan, aged 5 years, and John, aged 1 year, had been born in Lesmahagow.

Benjamin Milligan was head of a household living at Main Street, Douglas, Lanarkshire, according to the 1881 census for that town. He was a general labourer aged 44 years, as recorded there, and had been born in Ireland. 2 5


Benjamin married Margaret FEELY, daughter of James FEELY and Susan KEENAN, on 29 July 1856 in St Mary's RC Chapel, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 (Margaret FEELY was born in Ireland 7, baptised on 14 February 1836 in Shankill RC parish, County Armagh, Ireland 8 9 and died 18 February 1882 at 11.45 am in Douglas parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland 2 4.). The cause of her death was chronic pneumonia over 9 months.


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was celebrated after banns according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church. Father Michael Condon was the celebrant. George Hutchison and Rose Feely [sic] were witnesses.Rose Feely made her X mark.

Benjamin Muligan, who made his X mark, was a single man of 30 years of age who lived in Muir Street, Hamilton. He worked as a day labourer. Both of his parents were deceased.

Margaret Feely also made her X mark. She lived at Muir Street Hamilton and worked as a tambourer. She was aged 19 years and unmarried.

The marriage was registered at Hamilton on 30 July 1856, William Dickson being the registrar.



This marriage was recorded in the records of St Mary's RC parish Hamilton by Father Michael Condon who married "Benjamin Mulligan and Margaret Feely, of Hamilton, in the presence of George Hutcheson and Rose Feely" and signed the extract. 1 6
