The 1841 census for Rothes Morayshire recorded James Gordon, a shoemaker, aged 50 or in the 50-54 years age group, living in New Street with Margaret Gordon, Isabella Gordon and James Clark. James Gordon was born outside of Moray.
The 1851 census recorded James Gordon as head of the household living in New Street Rothes, with Margaret Gordon, Isabella Gordon and James Clark. His age was 67 years and he had been born in Mortlach Banffshire. He was a shoemaker by trade.
In 1861 James Gordon recorded as 77 years old, was the head of household of six members including himself living New Street, North End West Side No 19, in Rothes Morayshire. The census entry recorded him as born in Mortlach parish Banffshire and his occupation as Master Shoemaker. In the household with him lived Margaret Gordon his sister, Isabella Gordon, his daughter, two of Isabella's children and a boarder James Adams, 20 years of age and born in Rothes, who was a journeyman shoemaker.

The full cause of death certified by Wm Coutts MD of Rothes states: "Suppuration of the right lung resulting from injuries received from a cow which had attacked him".
Registration of death was made on information of the Procurator Fiscal of Elginshire. 5
James had a relationship with Ann WINTER. (Ann WINTER was born about 1805.)
