  General Notes:

Jane Evans Quigley was recorded by the 1851 census for Mochrum parish in Wigtownshire living as a lodger with Peter Evans Quigley at Elrig. Both were married and both were lodgers. Apart from the surname we know that Jane's occupation was noted as 'wife of dealer' and Peter's as 'dealer in hardware' so it appears they were living as a couple. Jane's age was noted as 40 years and her birthplace as Ireland.

When Jane Quigeley died in 1868, ten months after her husband Peter, she was recorded in her death certificate as "(Pauper) widow of Peter Quigeley (Pauper)" and her recorded age at death was 73 years. No parental information was noted. 1

  Research Notes:

NAMES

It is not clear why Peter and Jane Quigley are noted in the 1851 census us 'Evans Quigley'. No explanation or evidence regarding this has been found as yet. It may have been misheard by the enumerator, or it may have been some kind of joke, or it may have been something quite different.

JANE MCCAFFERY

A woman by the name of Jane McCaffery, born in Ireland, was recorded by the 1841 UK census for Hamilton Court, Canning Street in Barony parish, Glasgow. This is the Calton-Bridgeton area, Canning Street being now known as London Road. She was recorded as being in the 45-49 years age range, making her birth year between 1792 and 1796. John McCaffery, in the 25-29 years age range, a shoemaker born in Ireland, and Elizabeth McCaffery, in the 20-24 years age range, a cotton mill worker, were recorded alongside her.

When John McCaffery died in Muslin Street, Bridgeton, in 1880, his mother's maiden surname was noted as Jane Scott. The notification of his death to the registrar was made by a cousin also called Jane Scott. Her address was noted as Craigievole, near Swatragh, Ireland. Swatragh is a small village and townland in County Derry, about eighteen miles from Limavady. 2
