"James, the first laird of Tillyangus, was one of those who, unfortunately, took part in the battle of Corrichie, and was forfeited in consequence : his name does not occur in the remission granted in February 1567 : but in 1568 his name is found in the 'Band for the Queen's service, and to concur with and assist the Earl of Huntlie, her Majesty's Lieutenant in the North of Scotland,' immediately following that of George Gordon of Lesmoir, and preceding that of William Gordon of (probably Craig.)"

BATTLE OF CORRICHIE

adapted from Wikeipedia

"The Battle of Corrichie, also known as the Battle of Corrichy was a battle fought at Meikle Tap, near Aberdeen, in the year 1562. It was fought between the forces of George Gordon 4th Earl of Huntly against forces loyal to Mary Queen of Scots. George Gordon had defeated the English twenty years earlier but at Corriche he was defeated by Scots loyal to Queen Mary, and apparently he died of apoplexy after his capture. His son Sir John Gordon, who was also captured was executed the following day. His cousin John Gordon, 12th Earl of Sutherland was forfeited and fled to France where he remained until 1565. According tJohn Knox, at the parliament of May 1563, Huntly, Sutherland and eleven other Earls and Barons of the name Gordon were forfeited. In 1565 Queen Mary of Scotland restored the Earls of Huntly, Sutherland and others of the name Gordon who had been forfeited."

James married Christian LEITH, daughter of Patrick LEITH of Harthill and Clara LESLIE, after 28 April 1550.1 2 (Christian LEITH was born about 1530.)

  Marriage Notes:

"In 1547-48, a lease of Tullyangus was granted by Bishop William Gordon to William Gordon of Craige and James Gordon, his son : this transaction is referred to in a later Charter in favour of William Gordon, the latter' s son. In a charter of confirmation in favour of William Gordoun, apparent of Tulliangus, 1577 and 1591, a previous charter is referred to, granted by William, Bishop of Aberdeen, to William Gordoun, son and apparent heir of James Gordoun of Tillyangus, and to Bessie Gordoun, his spouse, in conjunct fee and to the longer liver of them, and to the heirs male lawfully begotten or to be begotten between them, whom failing to the nearer heirs male of the said William and his male assignees, reserving the free tenement of profits and usufructs to James Gordoun and Christian Leytht, his sponse, and the longer livers. Mention is made that Patrick Leytht of Harthill had been fiar of one half of said lands [probably he was either father or brother of Christian]. There is a footnote in which it is stated that Bishop William Gordon granted a lease of the lands of Tulliangous for 19 years to William Gordon of Craige and James Gordoun, his son, for a yearly rent of five pounds six shillings and eight pence, two bolls of oats, 12 capons, 2 rams, 40 pence for bondage silver, and half a mart.

The above Royal Charter is given in Reg. Magn. Sigill, date 1576 and 1591, Lib. XXXVIIL, No. 218 ('Ant. A. &B.' IV., p. 494) in the new Edit., R.M.S., in vol. V., No. 1874."
