BIRTH ORDER

Douglas Wimberley in his work on the Gordons of Craig offers different sources for the birth order of Patrick Gordon and Rachel Barclay's five sons.

According to the Balbithan manuscript, he says in pages 8 and 9, the order is:

1 William

2 Patrick

3 Thomas

4 John

5 George.

He continues:

"In the Harperfield Genealogy the names of the sons are given in the same order : a fragment of the Prony M.S. does not fully agree with these authorities. It runs - 'Patrick built the house of Craig, which bears date 1518, and married the laird of Towie-Barclay's daughter (their names and arms being above the door of the house) ; by which marriage there were five sons, viz.: - 1. William, the laird ; 2. Patrick of Auchmenzie ; 3. George of Milton of Noth ; 4. Mr John Gordon, Chaplain of Coclarachie ; 5. Thomas.'

The order in which the sons' names are placed in the Prony M.S. is probably correct, as George's comes next after Patrick's, as a substitute on failure of heirs male of Patrick, in a charter granted by Adam Gordon of Aboyne to Patrick of Johnnisleyis and Patrick, his son, and others, dated Terlane [Tarland], 24 April 1514. It may, however, be argued that Mr John, Chaplain of Coclarachie, whose name is omitted among the substitutes, was older than George." (page 9)

However, this conclusion, that the Prony M.S. order is correct, is somewhat opposed by the text Wimberley quotes earlier on page 6 from a Charter granted by Adam Gordon of Aboyne:

"In May 1517 Adam Gordon, now styled 'Earl of Sutherland, lord of the Barony of Obin,' confirms another Charter to much the same effect, but granted by Patrick Gordon of Johnnisleyis to Patrick Gordon his son and his heirs, whom failing to George Gordon, his son and his heirs, whom failing to Thomas Gordon and his heirs, whom also failing to John Gordon and his heirs, of the lands of Dalquhing and Wratoun : To be held from said Patrick of the Baron of Aboyne ; paying yearly to said Baron one penny in name of blench if asked ; at Auchendoir. Witnesses : Robt. Lumisden of Maidler, George and Thomas Gordons, sons of the granter. (Aboyne Charter Chest, apud 'Rec. of Aboyne,' p. 39.)"

The order in that Charter is Patrick, George, Thomas and John.

The latter order is the one used in this website. 2 3

Thomas married Janet LUMSDEN, daughter of Robert LUMSDEN 3rd of Medlar and Janet MORTIMER.1 (Janet LUMSDEN was born about 1480.)

  Marriage Notes:

"Thomas Gordon of Kincraigie married to Janet, daughter of Robert Lumsden of Cushny (see Note below), and had William (MS. Pedigree)."

from Records of Aboyne

Note:

Robert Lumsden of Cushnie, somewhat later in mid sixteenth century, did have a daughter Janet who married but not to Thomas Gordon of Kincraigie. She married James Duncan of Meldrum.
