The 1841 census for Haddington recorded George Muat living in Sidegate Close in Haddington. He was in the 70-74 years age range. In the same household lived Hamilton Muat aged 60-64 years, Matthew and Mary Barrie, both aged 30-34 years, and a child aged 1 year, John Barrie. George Muat was a shoe maker, and Matthew Barrie was a journeyman tanner. All in the household had been born in the census county. ^{2 3}

The couple, George Muat and Elizabeth Mitchel, are recorded in the Kirk session minutes of 1 December 1793 along with another couple who had married irregularly in Edinburgh in October:

"Both couple were declared married, admonished to live suitably, and paid the dues." ^{1 4}
