The 1841 census for Haddington recorded George Muat living in Sidegate Close in Haddington. He was in the 70-74 years age range. In the same household lived Hamilton Muat aged 60-64 years, Matthew and Mary Barrie, both aged 30-34 years, and a child aged 1 year, John Barrie. George Muat was a shoe maker, and Matthew Barrie was a journeyman tanner. All in the household had been born in the census county. ^{4 5}

George married Elizabeth MITCHEL on 20 May 1793 in Edinburgh, Scotland.¹ (Elizabeth MITCHEL was born about 1775.)
