Like his father, John also fought at Durham (1346), and like his king was taken prisoner. It was not until 1357 when ransom was paid that he was released. King David confirmed in a charter dated 20th March 1357/8 "confirming to John de Gordun the donation which King Robert I had made to his grandfather, Sir Adam, of the lands of Strathbogie."
