In 1841 the census recorded James Holme as the miller at the mill of Birkenbrewl in the parish of Auchindoir. He was recorded as 58 years old and was born in Aberdeenshire.

The 1851 census for Auchindoir in Aberdeenshire recorded James Home, a miller, as head of the household, living at Birkenbroul, The household comprised himself, his wife and their two children. James was recorded as 68 years of age and had been born in the parish of Oyne.

When James Home died in 1866 his death certificate recorded him as 'meal miller married to Jane Cobban'. His recorded age at death was 88 years. His parents were deceased. 3 4 5 7

BIRKENBROUL

Birkenbrewel or Birkenbrewl, and even Birkenbrowl, are alternative spellings found for the place where James and his family lived in 1851.

J. G. Smith MD certified the cause of death.

The son of James Home, William Home, who had been present where his father died, gave notice of his death before the registrar, Harry L. Smith, at Auchindoir on 2 July 1866. 5
