Alexander was the first Earl of Buchan since John Comyn during the wars of Scottish Independence.

On 2 November 1389 he was excommunicated for deserting his wife with a view to ending what was to him an unsatisfactory marriage.

Alexander next married Euphemia (I) Countess of Ross, daughter of William (III) Earl of Ross and Mary MACDONALD, in June 1382.2 (Euphemia (I) Countess of Ross was born about 1343, died after 5 September 1394 8 and was buried in Fortrose Cathedral, Scotland 3.)
