"He (Patrick Hepburn, younger) married a daughter and co-heir of the family of Vaux or de Vallibus, Lords of Dirlton, with whom he got a great accession to his estate. Patrick, first Earl of Bothwell, his descendant, quartered a bend for Vaux with his paternal coat in 1498. Patrick, third Earl, bore the same in 1538, and James, fourth Earl, in 1567. He had issue three sons"

"the second daughter was married to Sir Patrick Hepburn, younger, of Hailes, ancestor to the well known Earl of Bothwell, the husband of Mary, Queen of Scots, the Earl of Bothwell quartered the arms of Vaux, " argent a bend gules" in his atchievement. The Lords Ruthven, Home and Ker of Faudenside, all quartered the arms of Vaux."
