Alexander Sutherland succeeded his father William. In 1627, when just five years old, he became heir to Duffus. His uncle, James Sutherland of Kinminitie, became his tutor.
In 1641 Alexander accompanied the Earl of Sutherland on his visit to England, and attended both the Scottish Parliament at Edinburgh, and the visit of King Charles I. He was knighted before 1643.
In 1647 he received compensation from Parliament, for losses in supporting the Covenant. In total he received 3000 merks Scots. One third he gave to his uncle James Sutherland.
He travelled in Europe: in France then in Holland returning with the restored Charles II to Scotland in 1650.
Alexander married Jean MACKENZIE, daughter of Colin MACKENZIE Lord Fortrose, 1st Earl of Seaforth and Unknown, before 1644. (Jean MACKENZIE was born about 1622 and died on 31 March 1648.)
Alexander next married Jean INNES, daughter of Sir Robert INNES of that Ilk, 1st Baronet Innes and Grizel STEWART, on 13 January 1653. (Jean INNES was born about 1625.)
Alexander next married Margaret STEWART, daughter of James STEWART 4th Earl of Moray and Margaret HOME, in 1654. (Margaret STEWART was born about 1629.)
Alexander next married Margaret FORBES, daughter of William FORBES 12th Lord Forbes and Jean CAMPBELL of Cawdor, about 1668. (Margaret FORBES was born about 1640.)
