DOUGLAS, Elizabeth 1
General Notes: Cluny Castle, Aberdeenshire by H. Gordon Slade gives Elizabeth Douglas as the first wife of Sir Thomas Gordon of Cluny., but rather confusingly later refers to Violet as the first wife. Elizabeth's dates strongly suggest she was married to Thomas rather than to his son, and that she was his second wife not his son's, especially if the student of these matters is released from the notion that it was her son, the so called 'John', born 'after 1622' who was the 2nd baronet. If the mistake over given names is correct, and it was in fact Alexander, son of Alexander the 1st baronet, who married his step sister Leslie, then the issue becomes clearer. in particular the confusion of difficulties over dates recedes. William of Cotton and his brother John were sons of Elizabeth Douglas, as Stirnet has it, but not of Alexander, who was one generation later. 2 Elizabeth married Sir Thomas GORDON of Cluny, son of John GORDON of Cluny (of the First House) and Margaret GORDON. (Sir Thomas GORDON of Cluny was born about 1555 and died in 1607 2.) |
