Helen Shand was recorded by the 1851 census living with her family in Hillhead in the parish of Keig Aberdeenshire. She had been born in Keig Aberdeenshire and was aged 2 years.

The 1861 census for Keig parish Aberdeen recorded Helen Shand living with her family at Hillhead, a croft in the parish. She was a scholar. Helen was recorded as 13 years of age and born in Keig parish Aberdeenshire.

In her daughter Betsy's birth certificate of 1872 Helen Shand was recorded as a domestic servant. She was the informant of her daughter's birth at Alford on 28 May 1872.

Baby Andrew Diack's birth certificate recorded that he was illegitimate. The informants of his birth were his mother Helen Shand, a domestic servant, and his father James Diack of Meikle Glendowie(?) in the parish of Alford Aberdeenshire. The birth was notified before John Smith, registrar, at Alford on 20 June 1876.

The informants of John Johnston's birth were his mother Helen Shand, a domestic servant, and his father John Johnston of Kincraigie in the parish of Tough Aberdeenshire. The birth was notified before James Reid, registrar, at Alford on 25 April 1879.

The 1881 census recorded Helen Shand living with her widowed mother in Alford Aberdeenshire at 8 Village Road. With them lived Helen's 3 young children: Betsy Gall aged 8, Andrew Diack aged 4, and John Johnstone aged 1. helen was recorded as 32 years of age and a general domestic servant. She had been born in Keig Aberdeenshire and was unmarried.

In the 1881 census a young man named Peter Gordon was recorded living with Christina Home in Clatt, Aberdeen. The census entry described him as aged 13 years and born in Keig Aberdeen. A child of that name was born in that place on December 28 1867 to Helen Shand and George Gordon who were not married. The child of the couple was recorded as Peter Gordon or Shand

The 1891 census for St Nicholas parish Aberdeen recorded Hellen Mcleod living at 26 Charlotte Street with her husband, four of her children, and a male lodger. Hellen's children ranged in age from 2 months to 14 years. Hellen was recorded as 39 years old and born in Keig.

In 1896 when her son Peter Gordon married Mary Agnes Hacket in Peterhead, Helen Shand was recorded as deceased.

When Helen McLeod died in 1921, her death certificate recorded her as the widow of John McLeod, farm servant. Her recorded age at death was 72 years. Both of her parents were deceased. 2 3 6 7 8 9 10 11

DEE VILLAGE ABERDEEN

This area is now the Hydro-electric site. Previously it was a model village within the city called Dee Village, where weavers lived. It was built in the 1790s. There is a picture of Dee Village Square in some of the Press&Journal's photo books of Aberdeen.

George McLeod, son of the deceased and inmate, who had been present, gave notice of his mother's death before the registrar, W. M. Hall, at Aberdeen on 9 February 1921. 2

(George Strachan GORDON was born on 12 June 1845 in Clatt parish, Aberdeenshire, Scotland 12, baptised on 29 July 1845 in Clatt parish, Aberdeenshire, Scotland 12 and died 25 March 1929 at 12.10 pm in Kingston Grange Golf Course, Edinburgh, Scotland.). The cause of his death was apparently cerebral haemorrhage.2
