Research Notes:
THE KEITH FAMILY
The genealogy of the Keith family in Scotland is intricate to say the least. There are the usual repetition of first names, but often no dates accompany names who are said to succeed each other, or who are said to belong to the same nuclear family. Often brothers succeed rather than a simple father to son succession, and sometimes sons who should succeed die before their fathers and a son succeeds his grandfather.
"Marischal of Scotland" was a hereditary title, going back to at least the twelfth century, probably to Herveus de Keith who held office under King Malcolm IV of Scots. Later, in the reign of King James II of Scots who died in 1460, William Keith was raised to the status of Earl Marischal. The title was forfeited at the time of of the Jacobite rising of 1715. 2
John married Margaret COMYN, daughter of William COMYN Earl of Buchan, jure uxoris, Justiciar of Scotland and Marjory Countess of Buchan. (Margaret COMYN was born about 1216.)
