DOUGLAS, Robert 1

  • Born: About 1642
  • Marriage (1): INNES,

Another name for Robert was DOUGLASS, Robert.2

  General Notes:

Robert Douglas married a daughter of James Innes, grandson of Sir Robert Innes of that ilk. They had a son, Gilbert Douglas, who died unmarried in London in 1757.

"ROBERT DOUGLASS, the only son of Sir Robert Douglass, of Tilwhilly, and Elizabeth Burnet, his second wife, obtained a post in the East Indies as governor of a settlement there, by the interest of Governor Pitt, his wife's brother-in-law, grandfather
of the eminent statesman, the Rt. Hon. William Pitt. He acquired a large fortune, and on coming home purchased a
considerable estate in the County of Surrey. He was a Director of the Darien Company, and as such was impeached by
Parliament in 1696. It is uncertain when he died, but he married a Miss Innes, of the family of Reidhall, in Morayshire, one
of whose sisters has been mentioned as the wife of Governor Pitt, while another was married to Mr. John Wemyss, minister
of Rothes, brother of the Earl of Wemyss."
