Katherine married Sir George BARCLAY of that Ilk, 19th and last of Gartly, son of Walter BARCLAY of that Ilk, 18th of Gartly and Margaret OGILVY 'Lady Gartlie'.1 (Sir George BARCLAY of that Ilk, 19th and last of Gartly was born about 1534 and died by 1602 1.)

  Marriage Notes:

"George Barclay succeeded his father, Walter Barclay of that Ilk, in 1543. He married, first, Margaret Ogilvy, daughter of Sir Walter Ogilvy of Boyne, widow of John, Master of Buchane, and second, Catherine, daughter of the seventh Lord Forbes."

from Family of Barclay 1

Katherine next married John LEITH 2nd of Harthill, son of Patrick LEITH 1st of Harthill and Clara LESLIE, probably after 1599.2 (John LEITH 2nd of Harthill was born about 1534 and died about 1625 2.)

  Marriage Notes:

"It is quite certain that the elder (John Leith of Harthill) married Helen Auchinleck RMS 1593-1608, p. 310), who was dead by 1599 .... and virtually certain that he afterwards married a daughter of the seventh Lord Forbes, who survived him." (pages 28 and 29)

" .. in December 1633, Arthur, tenth Lord Forbes, John Leith's wife's kinsman, described himself as heritably infeft in the lands of Harthill and the tower and fortalice thereof. His right and peaceable possession had, he said, never been questioned until Abercromby of Auldrayne charged him to surrender it and on his refusal threatened legal proceedings....... Forbes himself was charged with resetting John Leith (4th of Harthill); to which he replied that he had only conferred with him ... for taking order with the rents and duties of the lands of Harthill, due to Katherine Forbes, Lady Harthill, his father's sister.

Now this Lady Harthill cannot have been the wife of the present laird, who was a Forbes but named Jean. Nor, it is certain, was she his father's wife, who had married Abercromby of Auldrayne ..... The presumption is, therefore, that she was the widow of the first John of Harthill (2nd laird), the violent laird's grandfather. Her nephew's reference to her great age supports this view. She was certainly a daughter of the seventh Lord Forbes ...... According to Dugdale's Peerage (Balfour paul's edition), the seventh Lord Forbes's daughter, Katherine, who was born in 1554, and would therefor have been nearly eighty at the time of these proceedings, married Barclay of Gartly; so that John Leith of Harthill must have been her second husband." (pages 53 and 54)
