He was seventh son of Thomas Gray of Mamewlay (M.A. Mar Coll., 1622), thrice Provost of Aberdeen, 1645 - 1655; and Great Grandson of Gilbert Gray (M.A., Edinburgh., 1592), second principal of Marischal College, 1598 - 1614"
