This was the second child in this family to be called John.


The 1901 UK census for Shotts Western District, Lanarkshire, recorded John (30 years old) and Bella Donnelly (27 years old) living at Ravenshall Rows, Cleland with their daughter Mary, aged 2 years, and their son, Thomas, aged 1 year. Withem were also living Patrick Donnelly, John's uncle, a 26 year old stone quarryman born in Ireland, and a boarder called John Gaffney, who was 18 years old and worked as a railway porter. Like the head of the household, he too was born in Ireland. Bella and the two children were born in Cleland. John Donnelly's occupation was as a barman. ^{1 2}
