In the birth certificate of his daughter, Mary, in 1855 James Donnally was recorded as an iron miner, aged 25 years, born in County Tyrone, Ireland. James and his wife were married in County Tyrone, Ireland in 1853 and had one son who was living. James Donnally gave notice of his daughter, Mary's birth before the registrar, William Paterson, at Shotts on 18 December 1855 and made his X mark thereto.

The 1861 census for Shotts parish recorded James Donnelly as head of a household living at 100 Omoa Square. In the household lived James, his wife and four children, and a lodger, James Curran, a 23 year old coal miner born in Ireland, and a nephew, William Donnelly, a single man of 17 years who had been born in Ireland and worked as a coal miner. James Donnelly himself was Irish born and recorded as 29 years of age. He was a coal miner.

In 1871 the Donnelly family, headed by James Donnelly, were living in Spellhall, near Cleland, in the parish of Bothwell in the registration district of Holytown. James was recorded as 40 years of age and worked as a coal miner. He was Irish born.

When he died in 1877, James Donnelly left a wife, Margaret Donnelly. He was recorded in his death certificate as 47 years of age. His father was deceased. His death certificate, on the basis of information provided by his son, recorded his parents as Charles Donnelly and Mary O'Neil. James Donnelly born in 1829 in Clonoe County, Tyrone has as his parents Owen Donnelly and Mary O'Neill, which has been recorded here.

When his daughter mary married in 1877, James Donnelly was recorded in her marriage certificate as 'coal miner deceased'.

In his son, Owen's marriage certificate of 1889, James Donnelly was recorded as a coal miner.

Charles Donnelly, son of the deceased who was present, gave notice before the registrar, James Boag, at Cleland on 27 June 1877 and made his X mark. 4

James married Margaret DONNELLY, daughter of Charles DONLY and Ann CONNOR, in 1853 in Clonoe, County Tyrone, Ireland.1 (Margaret DONNELLY was born in County Tyrone, Ireland 1, baptised on 9 December 1827 in Clonoe RC Church, County Tyrone, Ireland 2 and died 2 August 1893 at 2.15 pm in Auchinlee, Shotts Parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland 2 5 6.). The cause of her death was asthmatic bronchitis.4
