In the 1861 census Margaret was not included in her family's entry.
In 1862 the Poor Law records recorded that Margaret, aged 17 years, was a servant in Port Glasgow.
The 1881 census for Bothwell parish recorded 'Margret Cairns', wife of Michael, and their five children, living at Biggar Road. Her age was recorded as 36 years and her birthplace as Airdrie. Her five children ranged in age from 10 years to 1 year, and all had been born in Bothwell parish.
