   Cause of her death was pharyngitis over 6 days, hyperpyrexia and disordrered action of the heart over 24 hours.

  General Notes:

Mary was a little girl of 6 years when the 1871 census was taken. She lived in Greenhill, near Cleland in Lanarkshire with an older brother and sister, and a younger brother and sister.

Mary was aged 16 years and a brick worker according to the 1881 census.

Mary was a witness at her sister Catherine's marriage in 1884.

Mary was unmarried in 1891, aged 24 years and a brickfield worker.

When Mary McAlinden died in 1932 she was recorded in her death certificate as the widow of Hugh McAlinden, quarryman. Her recorded age at death was 67 years. Her parents were deceased. 3 4

John Lithgow MD certified the causes of death.

Henry McAlinden, Mary's son, who had been present where the death occurred, gave notice of his mother's death before the registrar, Alexander Craig, at Cleland on 20 June 1932. Henry McAlinden's address was noted as 19 Kenilworth Crescent, Bellshill.


Mary married Hugh McLINDEN, son of Henry McALINDEN and Mary Jane BURKE, on 11 July 1895 in RC Chapel, Cleland, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 (Hugh McLINDEN was born on 12 May 1870 in Ireland 1 5, baptised on 13 May 1870 in Shankill RC Parish, County Armagh, Ireland 6 and died before 20 June 1932.)


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was solemnised after banns according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The priest was Father Patrick Hackett and the witnesses were John McManus and Lizzie Vallely.

Hugh McLinden worked as a quarryman. He lived at Spoutscroft near the village of Cleland. He was unmarried and aged 24 years.

Mary Valleley was also unmarried and aged 29 years. She lived at Wyndedge near Cleland in the western district of Shotts. Her father was deceased.

The marriage was registered at Cleland on 12 July 1895, the signing registrar being Edward Sommerville. 1
