  General Notes:

The 1841 census for the Holytown district of Bothwell parish recorded Mary McLean living in Burnybrae Row, Chapelhall, with her husband, and their two small children, aged 5 years and 2 years. Mary was recorded as being in the 25-29 years age group, and had been born in Ireland.

In 1851 Edward McLean and his wife, Mary, were recorded living in Carlisle Road, Chapelhall, in the parish of Bothwell, Lanarkshire, with their six children ranging in age from 1 year to 14 years. Mary was 35 years old and had been born in Ireland.

The census of 1861 for Bothwell parish recorded the McLean family living at Carlisle Road, Chapelhall. Mary McLean lived with her husband and three of their children, James, Thomas and Maria. She was recorded as 48 years of age and as having been born in Ireland.

The 1881 census for Bothwell parish, Lanarkshire, recorded Mary McLean as the head of a small household living in the Holytown district. She was Irish born, and now a widow. Her age was recorded as 65 years. She was the housekeeper. Her son, James McLean, and a little granddaughter, Alice Donnelly, lived with her.

When Mary Higgins [sic] died in 1884, her recorded age at death was 63 years. Her death certificate recorded her as the 'widow of Edward McLean labourer at the iron works'. Both of her parents were deceased. 2 3 4 6 7

  Medical Notes:

John Taylor, physician and surgeon, certified the cause of death.

John Timmons, Mary's son in law, residing in Chapelhall, gave notice of her death before the registrar, William Richard, at Chapelhall on 15 December 1884.


Mary married Edward McLEAN, son of John McLEAN and Mary KEATINGS. (Edward McLEAN was born in 1809 in Ireland 1 4 5 and died 17 October 1872 at 5.30 am in Chapelhall, Bothwell Parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland 1 5.). The cause of his death was general paralysis over several months.3
