A Medical Certificate of Successful Vaccination for the child, William George Allen whose father was of the same name, was dated 10 October 1880, signed by Claremont, a medical practitioner. The birth of the child was dated 1 June 1880 and registered on 9 July 1880, and the minutes of notice were given to the child's mother who was not named. The notice was made in St Pancras, Camden, London, and the place of birth was noted as 30 Netley Street. The father of the child was recorded as a "Lamp Cleaner N.W.R", presumably North Western Railways.

In the 1881 census for 22 Dalziel Street, Motherwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland, a child of 10 months was recorded as part of the household of Patrick Quigley and Margaret George. His name was William Allan, and he had been born in London. He was listed as 'nephew', although he was in all likelihood the grandson, to the head of the household. His mother was not listed in the Motherwell entry. W.S. Allen, aged 10 months and born in St Pancras Middlesex, was also listed in the 1881 census for England, living at 13 Netley Street, St Pancras, Middlesex, England, along with his parents W.G. Allen, a railway servant, and Mary Allen. W.G. Allen was aged 25 years and born in St Pancras; Mary was 20 years old and born in Scotland.
Note:Other examples of this double entry have been encountered.

In 1891 the census recorded Mary Alan, a widow and an invalid, living in a dwelling with one windowed room at 95 Muir Street with her son, William aged 10 years, and her daughter Margaret, aged 7 years. Mary was recorded as 30 years of age and born in Galston, Ayrshire. William had been born in London and Margaret in Edinburgh. Both children were at school.

In 1901, according to the census for Hamilton, William G. Allen was living with his mother and his sister at 95 Muir Street. He was recorded as 20 years of age and his birthplace was noted as England. His occupation was recorded as fireman on a railway.

William served in the Great War, 1914-1918, in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He was invalided out of the service after being exposed to 'mustard gas'. Though this left him disabled, he survived until 1923 when he died in Larbert Asylum. His death certificate recorded him as a locomotive engine driver, married to Jane Henry Thomson. His age at death was 43 years. His usual residence was Allander View, Milngavie. Both of his parents were recorded as deceased.

William's daughter Martha's birth certificate of 1915 recorded him as a "Locomotive Engine Driver now a Private in D Company of the 9th Battalion of the A & S Highlanders". he was the informant of the birth and his address was 51 Goldington Avenue Bedford. 2 4 6 8 9 10 12
