KELLY, Sibby 1

  • Born: About 1760
  • Marriage (1): McKENDRICK, John

Other names for Sibby were KELLY, Libby,1 KELLY, Sophia, McKENDRICK, Sibby 2 and McKENDRICK, Sophia.

  General Notes:

Though there are a good number of Kellys in Argyll and specifically in the parish of Killean and Kilchenzie, no one named Sibby Kelly has been found for the appropriate dates. Three males who were having children baptised in the parish at about the time Sibby was born were named Niel, Mathew and Duncan.

Duncan's 5 children were baptised between 1762 and 1769, and were named Margaret, Mathew, Mary, Duncan and James.

Mathew's 3 children were baptised between 1763 and 1768, and were named Margaret, James and John.

Niel's 4 children were baptised between 1763 and 1775, and were named
Kate, More, Alexander and Flora.

The records for the parish baptisms begin only in 1762, so it is certainly possible that any one of these men could have been Sibby's father or uncle.

  Research Notes:

Sometimes also Shibby, and in full Sibella or Sybil. Found in mainland Britain and in Ireland. A Queen of Scotland in the eleventh century had this name. She was Sybil Fitzsiward (1014-about1040s), of Northumbrian origin, married to king Duncan I of Scotland, and mother of Kings Donald and Malcolm of Scotland. 3

Sibby married John McKENDRICK, son of Donald McKENRICK and Margaret McEACHARN. (John McKENDRICK was baptised on 20 May 1757 in Campbeltown, Argyll, Scotland.)
