The 1881 census for Barony parish, Glasgow, recorded Joseph Tweedlie living with his family at 763 Duke Street. His age was recorded then as 6 months and his birthplace as Glasgow. He was a twin of his brother David.

Joseph was just 6 years old when his mother applied for parish relief in 1886. ^{4 5 6}
