Catherine Hart, Ellen's mother, gave notice of her daughter's birth before the registrar, Alex. Wright, at Dalziel on 31 December 1879.

The 1881 census taken in the district of Holytown in the parish of Bothwell recorded Catherine Hart living at 5 Carfin Road with her husband and her 2 year old son Patrick. Catherine was recorded as 25 years of age and had been born in Bothwell parish Lanarkshire. Her daughter Ellen was recorded by the census staying with relatives in Hamilton. ^{1 2}
