William was aged 14 years when recorded by the 1841 census for Kilmarnock. He lived in Back Street. He had been born in Ayrshire.

The 1851 census for Irvine recorded William living with his brother Samuel and Samuel's wife at Bridgegate. His age was recorded as 27 years and his birthplace as Kilwinning. 3 5


William married on 30 May 1723 in Strichen parish, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.1 2

".... Charles (Gordon) was served 'heir general' to his father on 20th May and 28th July, 1718. He married Margaret, daughter of Rev. Walter Stewart, parish minister of Ellon, and of his wife, Elizabeth, daughter of Sir John Forbes of Waterton. He was long in Cairnurchies, and acquired Fetterangus from the above-named Charles Morison."

"On July 20, 1733, Charles Gordon 'in Cairnurchies,' and his spouse, Margaret Stewart, had sasine in life rent, and William, their eldest son, in fee of the lands of Fetterangus, as principal and Achtidore in warrandice on disposition by Charles Morrison of Fetterangus (Banff Sasines). Fetterangus (300 acres) was advertised for sale 1757 (Abd. Journal, April 26, 1757). William Gordon was the proprietor."
