  General Notes:

In 1871 the census for Hamilton recorded Bernard Lynch, aged 43 years, living with his three children, Eliza, John and Rosa, at 1 Blackwell Lane. He was a coal miner, born in Ireland.

The 1881 census for Blantyre recorded Bernard Lynch, a coal miner aged 54 years, living 'off Hamilton Road'. He was head of a family that comprised his wife Frances, his son Bernard, his daughter Rose Ann, and a grandchild named Elizabeth Russell. Bernard's place of birth was Ireland.

A Bernard Lynch, recorded as aged 74 years, and Fanny Lynch aged 66 years, were included in the 1891 census for Hamilton living at 40 Argyle Buildings. Bernard was a miner, and had been born in Ireland. They had a daughter Rose Ann, recorded as 27 years old and born in Wishaw Lanarkshire, as was her mother. Rose Ann was a servant by employment. As well as these three there were three youngsters, Maggie aged 10 years, Mary aged 5 years and James aged 2 years. These were listed as son and daughters of the head of the family, Bernard. This may have resulted from confusion, depending on who was the family member giving the information, for they are likely to have been grandchildren brought up by the older couple, the children of their daughter Rose Ann. There were also two boarders living in the household whose surname was Rea.

Bernard's death certificate of 1899 recorded him as aged 60 years at the time of death. Both his parents were deceased. His son, John Lynch, of Springfield Place, Blantyre gave notice of his father's death.

Bernard was a coal hewer according to the death certificate of his daughter Rose Ann in 1935. 3 4 5 7 8

  Marriage Notes:

"Sophia (Hay), who had a charter from her father of the lands of Ardgeath, etc., died about 12 March 1642. She was married in 1626 to John, Viscount Melgum, second son of George, first Marquess of Huntly, and had issue a daughter. (Henrietta)"

from Scots Peerage (vol 3)

Note:

"By letters patent, dated at Whitehall 20 April 1632, reciting the death of Viscount Melgum without heirs-male of his body, George, Lord Gordon, eldest son of the first Marquess of Huntly, was created Viscount Aboyne for the life of his father with remainder on his own death or succession to the Marquessate to his second son James and his heirs-male bearing the name and arms of Gordon. In terms of this patent Lord James ultimately became Viscount Aboyne." (Scots Peerage volume 1)

"John (Gordon), created Viscount of Aboyne and Melgum in 1627. He married Sophia Hay, fifth daughter of Francis, Earl of Errol, and they were infeft in the Lordship of Aboyne on 8th July 1626. He perished in the fire at Frendraught in 1630, leaving a daughter. His widow was given Aboyne Castle as a dower house, and an interesting account of her residence there is to be found in Blackhall's 'Briefe Narration.' "

from Records of Aboyne

Note:

Gilbert Blakhal names "Ladye Isabelle" as the fifth daughter of the 9th Earl. He also mentions a sister of Sophia, named as "ladye Margarite" who lived with the Countess of Aboyne. Blakhal describes the Countess as "a noble, liberal and thankful ladye as ever lived."
