The 1881 census for Edinburgh St Cuthbert's recorded James Dott as head of a household of two, himself and his wife, living at 97 Fountain Bridge. James was recorded as 37 years of age and born in Glasgow. His occupation was noted as a packing box maker. ⁴

James married Sarah QUIGLEY, daughter of James QUIGLEY and Martha ROSS, on 11 Apr 1873 in High Church, Glasgow, Scotland.¹ (Sarah QUIGLEY was born about 1846 in Ireland or possibly Glasgow ⁵ and died in 1883 in Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Scotland ^{5 6}.)

James next married Christian MITCHELL before 29 Apr 1574.^{2 3} (Christian MITCHELL was born about 1800 and died after 7 Jun 1860 ⁷.)
