The 1851 census for Barony parish Glasgow recorded Willaim and Crighton Russell living there as husband and wife. William was 28 years old, a journeyman bootmaker, born in Glasgow, and his wife Crighton was recorded as 25 years old and born in Grangemouth Linlithgowshire.

In the 1856 birth certificate of his daughter Margaret, William Russell was recorded as "news agent". William, who had been present where the birth occurred, notified the registrar Nicol MacDougall at Glasgow on 11 January 1856, and made his X mark. 2 3


William married Crichton Stuart MILNE, daughter of John MILNE and Margaret SCLANDERS. (Crichton Stuart MILNE was born on 8 Jul 1820 4 5 and was christened on 23 Jul 1820 in Falkirk parish, Stirlingshire, Scotland 4 5.)


William next married on 13 May 1697 in Auldearn parish, Nairn, Scotland.1
