The father of John was called John Lynass in the child's birth certificate in 1857, whereas the marriage in 1854 was between Margaret McKinlay and OWEN Lynas.

Margaret Lynass, the baby's mother, notified the registrar at Glasgow, Peter Ferguson, on 21 September 1857, of the birth. The registrar noted not only that she made her X mark, but that she was 'present'! ⁴
