  General Notes:

The 1861 census for Glasgow recorded John Lynas as head of a household consisting of himself, his sister Bridget, and his brother Owen, along with Owen's two sons and two daughters, living at 94 Gallowgate in the Calton district. He was a labourer, aged 60 years and had been born in Ireland.

John died in the city poorhouse, but his usual residence was 96 Gallowgate Street, Glasgow. He was a pauper when he died, and had formerly been a labourer. He was single and aged 64 years at the time of his death in 1873.

"APPLICATION FOR PARISH RELIEF
The application for poor relief was initially made by John's niece at 5.15 pm on May 19 1873. His niece was not named. John's residence was given as 94 Gallowgate Front 1 up right.
His place of birth was recorded as Ireland, County Armagh, Kilravey parish.

The inspector visited the applicant at 11 am on May 20 1873. The applicant, John, was a single man, aged 64, a labourer and a Roman Catholic. He suffered from asthma. He was the son of Matthew Lynas, a labourer and Kitty Girsel, both deceased.

This was his first application for poor relief. The settlement was Glasgow's. His niece Mary was residing at the same address.

Assistant Inspector P. Stewart signed the particulars. In the 'Particulars of Settlement' section, it stated that John had been at 94 Gallowgate in Glasgow parish ( Mr Goodwin -presumably the landlord) for 20 years.
On 21 May 1873 ( he was transferrd to the poor) house; a van was sent. On 24 May 1873 he died (at the poor) house." 1 3

  Research Notes:

'Kilravey' parish may be Killeavy parish in County Armagh, as no Kilravey has been found. 4

  Medical Notes:

The informant of John's death was John McPherson, the clerk to the gpvernor of the poorhouse.

John married Joseph McGONAGALL, son of Charles McGONAGALL and Margaret MAXWELL, on 27 Oct 1713 in Saint Nicholas Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland.5 (Joseph McGONAGALL was born about 1837 in Ireland 6 7.)
