The 1871 census for Stow Midlothian recorded Mary Brodie living in the same dwelling as George Tait at Edinburgh Road Killochyett, and noted as his 'Aunt in law'. George was a widower. His deceased wife Margaret Walker was Mary Brodie's niece. Mary was recorded as unmarried, aged 72 years and born in Innerleithen, Peebleshire. She was an annuitant.
